Ball Size Guide

SenseMat 360 works with any ball size. For footwork drills on the mat:

  • Size 3 — Best for ages 6–9; tighter control work
  • Size 4 — Ages 9–12; standard academy drills
  • Size 5 — Ages 13+; full match-weight feel

Setup: Step-by-Step

  1. Choose your surface — Roll out on a flat, non-slip surface indoors (hardwood, gym floor, turf) or outdoors on short grass. Avoid wet or loose surfaces.
  2. Set your distance — Stand at the mat's center marker. For tight cone drills, position cones 3–5 ft (1–1.5 m) from the mat edge. For wider passing lanes, space them 6–10 ft (2–3 m) out.
  3. Angle your stance — Face the mat straight on for linear drills. Rotate 45° or 90° for lateral and diagonal patterns — the 360° design supports all directions.
  4. Anchor the mat — On smooth indoor floors, the non-slip backing holds the mat in place. On grass, use corner pegs or training cones placed just outside the mat to keep it from shifting during quick cuts.
  5. Warm up — Do 1–2 minutes of light toe taps on the mat before starting drills to get feel for the surface underfoot.

3 Starter Drills

Drill 1 — Quadrant Toe Taps (5 min)
Divide the mat visually into four quadrants. Tap each quadrant in sequence — front-left, front-right, back-right, back-left — using alternating feet. 3 rounds of 30 seconds, 15-second rest between rounds.

Drill 2 — Lateral Shuffle & Touch (5 min)
Shuffle left, tap the mat's left zone twice with your left foot, shuffle right, tap the right zone twice with your right foot. 3 rounds of 40 seconds. This builds lateral quickness and two-footed contact.

Drill 3 — Cognitive Direction Call (5 min)
A partner calls a direction (front, back, left, right) at random. Move to that mat zone and touch it with the correct foot. Builds reactive decision-making under time pressure — core to the SenseMat 360 training philosophy.

💡 Pro tip: Combine SenseMat 360 with SenseBall for a full solo training circuit — footwork patterns on the mat, then ball-striking reps with the trainer. Many players run 10-minute alternating rounds for maximum touch volume.
